Clary Sage Essential Oil is procured through steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea, native to Southern Europe and commercially cultivated in France and Russia. Its primary advantage is its calming effect on the nerves and it is especially beneficial for female health issues. It is also believed to alleviate skin conditions such as acne, boils, and ulcers and relieve muscle and joint pain.
Clary sage is beneficial for individuals dealing with depression, stress, and insomnia. It has been employed to assist women's issues like painful periods, irregular menstruation, and labor. During menopause, this oil is thought to minimize hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, headaches, and dizziness. Considered an aphrodisiac, it is also beneficial for digestion and kidney health. Clary sage oil should be used sparingly and avoided when drinking alcohol as it can heighten intoxication and potentially cause headaches.
Historically, clary sage was referred to as Oculus Christi, or 'the eye of Christ,' in the middle ages. It was a highly valued medicine even then. In Jamaica, locals used it for cleaning and cooling ulcers and treating eye inflammation. Despite being a costly oil, it has been an invaluable and effective component in aromatherapy and natural medicine for many years.
