Marjoram Essential Oil is obtained through steam distillation from the Thymus mastichina plant, characterized by a furry stem, oval leaves, and small white flowers grouped together. The plant has a potent aroma and is a wild variety of thyme, also known as Spanish Wild Marjoram. It is a member of Spain's lamiaceae family and is distinct from sweet or French Marjoram and oregano, also referred to as wild marjoram.
This oil is reportedly more beneficial than sweet marjoram oil as an expectorant for respiratory tract ailments and spasms due to its antiseptic properties for the upper respiratory tract. However, it doesn't have muscle relaxant or sedative properties like sweet marjoram oil. Spanish marjoram oil is often used in aromatherapy, pairing well with lavender and bergamot oils to create a calming atmosphere. It's said to soothe the nerves and combat feelings of loneliness and rejection when used in an oil burner or massage oil. It also helps with digestion.
Spanish wild marjoram has a long history of use by herbalists dating back to ancient Greece. The Greeks and Romans would crown newlyweds with marjoram garlands as a symbol of love, honor, and joy. Singers would drink marjoram tea with honey for voice preservation.
