Geranium Essential Oil, extracted through steam distillation from the leaves and stalks of the Pelargonium odoratissimum plant (apple geranium), is known for its intense aroma that combines floral notes with hints of mint and apple. This oil's main characteristic is its power to uplift and balance, and it is used to alleviate various conditions of both mind and body.
The geranium essential oil is beneficial in balancing the oiliness and dryness of the skin, as well as in calming the mind, thereby reducing stress and anxiety. It is believed to influence the adrenal cortex, bringing balance to the hormonal system. This oil has been used in the treatment of a variety of conditions including acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, hemorrhoids, ringworm, ulcers, breast engorgement, edema, poor circulation, sore throat, tonsillitis, PMS, menopausal issues, stress, and neuralgia. The oil's potent aroma is also effective in repelling mosquitoes. Adding a few drops to shampoo can help eliminate head lice.
The geranium plants were historically planted as hedges around homes to ward off spirits (just as they repel mosquitoes). Originally found in South Africa, Reunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco, these plants were brought to Europe in the 17th century. Out of about 700 varieties of this plant, only 10 produce essential oil in significant quantities. The varieties grown in gardens usually yield too little oil for extraction purposes.
