Patchouli Essential Oil is derived from the Pogostemon cablin plant of the mint genus, possessing a rich, musky-sweet, and spicy aroma. This plant is indigenous to Malaysia and India, where it's known as 'puchaput'. The term patchouli originates from the Tamil word 'pachchaiilai', which translates to 'green leaf.' The oil is distilled from the youthful leaves, which are dried and fermented prior to steam distillation. The fragrance and potency of this oil enhance with age. It is highly prized in skincare, particularly in the healing of scars.

In oriental nations, patchouli oil is included in potpourris and sachets sandwiched between linen and clothing for its aroma and its ability to repel bedbugs and other insects. The oil is reputed to balance emotions and create a romantic ambiance. When diffused, it alleviates anxiety and depression. When added to bathwater, it is believed to treat skin and scalp conditions, fungal infections, fluid retention, cellulite, and constipation. It has remarkable tissue regeneration properties, accelerates healing, and combats infections. Thus, it is beneficial for acne, eczema, weeping sores, ulcers, and athlete's foot.

Apparently, patchouli was inserted between Indian cashmere shawls before being shipped to Victorian England as a moth deterrent. Without the distinctive scent of dried patchouli leaves, the shawls were unsellable in England. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense gained immense popularity in the 1960s and 70s among hippies, as patchouli masked body odour and the smell of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was employed as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks. In several Asian countries, patchouli is also utilized as a remedy for snakebite.
